Idee & Ursprung
Der Song ist tatsächlich auch der erste, der für das Album geschrieben worden ist, welcher dann auch eine Art Blaupause für die folgenden Songs darstellte, auch wenn sich der Sound danach trotzdem noch ein wenig weiterentwickelte.
Das Synthie-Intro sowie auch das Outro wurde erst nach Fertigstellung des restlichen Songs hinzugefügt, um die besondere Stimmung, die sowohl durch Dunkelheit/Einsamkeit als auch Aufbruchstimmung markiert ist, zu verdeutlichen. Das titelgebende Dunkle Tal ist gleichermaßen Ruhe vor dem Sturm wie auch der Ausgangspunkt für eine verhängnisvolle, düstere Reise. Der Song erhält dadurch eine Klammer, so dass dieser zwar komplett für sich steht, der jedoch gleichzeitig auch das Intro in das Album markiert.
Storyline
Der Abstieg in das DARK VALLEY. Raus aus der Normalität, rein in die dunkle Fantasiewelt. Vom DARK VALLEY verspricht sich der dunkle Held Freiheit, Frieden und Erlösung, obwohl er schon ahnt, dass es kein einfacher Weg ist, den er gewählt hat.
